:: NBR moves to settle cases over Tk 6,500 cr ~

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has initiated a move to dispose of 16,372 lawsuits over Tk 6,542 crore in revenue, pending trial for years.

Senior NBR officials, including its chairman Muhammad Abdul Mazid, had a meeting today with the law officers of the Attorney General's Office to find a way out for quick disposal of the cases.

After the meeting, Mazid told reporters that they had discussed with the lawyers about how the cases could be settled quickly.

The NBR organised a weeklong training for the officials, dealing with the cases, from March 29-April 3.

Of the pending cases, 1,580 are over Tk 1,700 crore in income tax, 2,023 over Tk 3,112 crore in value added tax (VAT) and 12,769 over Tk 1,730 in customs duty.

"We often find it difficult to work due to the pending cases. This backlog may spur some people to do something illegal as it generally takes time for a case to be disposed of," the NBR chairman said.

NBR sources said the target for growth of revenue collection in the current fiscal year was more than 15 percent and the collection rose by about 12 percent in the last seven months on a year-on-year basis.

A senior official said the global economic recession might hit the revenue collection target hard this year. The collection may fall short of the target of Tk 54,500 crore, he said.

He said the collection might not be more than Tk 51,000 crore.

The shortfall could be narrowed down if the cases had been settled.
