Economists, bankers and experts at a seminar yesterday said the next budget for 2009-10 fiscal should lay emphasis on development of power generation, reduction of inflation and acceleration of economic growth for achieving status for the 'middle income' country by the year 2021.
They also stressed the need for low interest of loan rate for flourishing the small and medium enterprises (SME) sector and give scope for investment of foreign remittance to help create jobs and add GDP growth.
The speakers stressed the need for a budgetary measure in facing the ongoing global economic meltdown.
Their observation came at the seminar on 'National Budget for FY 2009-10' organised by Islamic Economics Research Bureau (IERB) at the hall room of the organisation at Purana Paltan in the city.
Shah Abdul Hannan, former secretary and chairman of IERB presided over the seminar while Prof AR Bhuyan, presented the keynote paper.
The seminar was addressed among, others by Dr SM Ali Akqas, Prof Ali Ahmad Rushdi, Dr Shahidul Islam, Prof M Mujahidul Islam, Prof M Lokman, Abdul Awal, Engineer M Fazlee Ali, Dr Mizanur Rahman, Md Nurul Islam, Shafiullah and Prof Sharif Hossain, secretary general IERB.
The speakers were of the opinion to expand tax net and increase the size of ADP and reduce the interest rate with a view to attracting more investment.
Prof AR Bhuyan said, only 31 percent of the development budget (ADP) has been implemented in the first seven months of the fiscal.
"If the revenue situation does not improve, budget deficit in the present fiscal may rise well beyond the budgetary target," he added.
The objectives and priorities of the next budget should focus on education, health care facilities, and rural development such as agriculture related sub -sector sector.
The speakers emphasised the need for taking medium and long-term goal for reducing poverty. | Source : | |
