Bangladesh will work with Thailand to reduce trade gap, which is heavily in favour of Thailand, said foreign minister Dr Dipu Moni Monday.
"Thailand exports over $500 million worth of products to Bangladesh a year against imports worth over $20 million," he said at a joint press conference with Thai foreign minister Kasit Piromya.
Exportable items of Bangladesh have increased and the country can seek Thai help to reduce the gap, Dr Dipu Moni said.
There should be comprehensive communication network policies including shipping, road and air to facilitate transportation of goods between the countries, she added.
"Thailand needs certain products like pharmaceuticals as medical tourism is growing in the country," the foreign minister said.
Thai foreign minister said there is ample scope to improve trade, tourism and technical cooperation between the two countries.
"Bangladesh is facing electricity and gas supply problems and my country can help in this regard," Mr Piromya said.
Petroleum Authority of Thailand has experience in exploration and there are many Thai companies which can set up power plants in Bangladesh, he added.
For the trade facilitation, Dhaka and Bangkok must have good communication network and a tri-nation road network can be established from Bangladesh through Myanmar to Thailand, the Thai foreign minister said.
"It is good for the region if Myanmar becomes more open," he said.
Thailand and Bangladesh would also work jointly to solve the Rohingya issue, Mr Piromya said.
There are about 20,000 Rohingya refugees in Thailand.
Dr Dipu Moni said the countries will conduct a feasibility study on export of skilled and professional to Thailand.
"Thailand lacks good English teachers in their education institutes and Bangladesh can explore the opportunities in that area," she said.
About the security issues, both the countries will exchange intelligence information regarding drug, human and arms trafficking in the region, she added. | Source : | |
