A total of 3.54 lakh Bangladeshi workers went abroad in the last nine months, while the country earned remittances of 6.1 billion US dollars in the last eight months.
Expatriates Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain said this at a meeting with the newly- appointed counselors of labour wings abroad. Despite global economic meltdown, the minister said, 15 to 20 percent more workers went abroad in the last nine months in comparison to the same period of 2006.
"Twenty-two lakh Bangladeshis work in Saudi Arabia, and more would get scope to go there as work for construction of six mega cities will begin in the kingdom very soon," he said. Terming Bangladeshi expatriate workers as the pride of the nation, the minister said the manpower export sector is playing an important role in the national economy.
He called on the newly-appointed labour counselors to perform their responsibilities with honesty which were vested in them for protection of the interest of workers and their welfare. The minister said the resources of the country are limited and work will have to be carried out within that resources in the interest of the country.
He also suggested the labour counselors to be careful during attestation of demand letters for recruiting workers. Joint Secretary of the ministry Mansur Raja Chowdhury and newly-appointed labour counselors of Kuwait, Malaysia, Libya and Singapore were present at the meeting. | Source : | |
