The Power Division will float tender to generate 114MW of electricity from solar energy and wind energy within a month.
Power Division Secretary Md Abul Kalam Azad told The New Nation after a meeting on "Solar and Wind Energy" at the Secretariat yesterday.
"Power Division will float tender to generate electricity between 9MW and 14MW from solar energy while it will invite tender to generate 50MW to 100MW from wind energy," he said, adding, "All government offices and establishments will come under solar home system (SHS) within the next three years.
A four-member team, led by Power Development Board (PDB) Director KM Hasan, has already selected sites to install the power plants. Jamalpur, Rajshahi and Kaptai in Chittagong have been selected for solar energy plants and Patenga in Chittagong selected for lone wind power plant.
Besides, the SHS will also include in building code, according to him.
He said that the production of 114MW electricity would go for national grid.
"Power Division will install solar home system (SHS) having capacity of 20 kilowatt at Red Block in Prime Minister Office, Azad said.
Terming solar energy as a "dedicated energy", Power Division secretary said, "Solar energy will help reduce pressure in national grid line.
Renewable energy experts at the meeting said that the government's initiative to produce electricity from solar energy is not cost effective now.
Prof Dr Bibuti Roy who works for solar energy in Khulna told The New Nation that per megawatt of electricity generation from traditional power plant will require between Tk 6 and Tk 7 crore while it will need Tk 100 crore for producing same capacity of electricity from solar energy here.
He advised the Power Division to install solar integrated system (SIS) instead of solar home system (SHS) so that it could be more effective for consumers.
Power Development Chairman ASM Alamgir Kabir, representatives from Rural Electrification Board (REB), Dhaka Electric Supply Company (DESCO), Dhaka Power Distribution Company (DPDC) were present at the meeting.
According to renewable energy policy, the government has targeted to produce 450MW electricity from renewable energy by 2015 while it will be 1,600MW by 2020.
Of the government's target, the Power Division targeted to produce 200MW of electricity from wind energy while it will be 100MW from solar energy by 2013. | Source : | |
