:: Pre-paid meter to cut system loss in power sector planned ~

The government has a plan to introduce pre-paid meter system with the connections of electricity to reduce system loss side by side with stopping pilferage in the power sector.

State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Mohammad Enamul Haque said this in the Jatiya Sangsad on Thursday while replying to a supplementary question from treasury bench lawmaker Engineer Mosharraf Hossain.

He said the system loss of electricity under the Power Development Board (PDB) has been reduced to 15 percent, while it is 10 to 11 percent under the Rural Electrification Board (REB).

In reply to a query from treasury bench lawmaker Noni Gopal Mandal, the State Minister said the government has a plan to bring every village and union parishad under the coverage of electricity.

"The Prime Minister has given directives for expanding the electricity supply to every corner of the country and it is being done on the basis of priority," he said. At present, he added, priority has been given to expanding supply of power for the existing connections and raising its generation.

Replying to another query from treasury bench lawmaker Md Jainal Abedin, the State Minister said the government would do everything possible for the development of overall power sector.

New electricity connections would be given in the second phase as it needs time to ensure further improvement in the sector, he said adding that the sector was put in a problematic situation over the last seven years, especially during the BNP- led alliance regime.

Plans have been undertaken for expansion of connection of electricity through PDB but it would take sometimes for giving new connections under the REB, he added.

Replying to a query from lawmaker Nasimul Alam Chowdhury, the State Minister said a total of 3,628 illegal connections under PDB were disconnected from July 1 to 15 this year.

"It is a routine work and PDB regularly operates such drive to reduce the system loss and improve service for the subscribers across the country," Mohammad Enamul Haque added.

In reply to a query from treasury bench lawmaker Sheikh Afil Uddin, he said the arrear electricity bills from the municipalities across the country under PDB amounts to Taka 28.14 crore. The amount is Taka 1.91 crore as on August this year from 195 municipalities under 61 Rural Electricity Samity areas, he said.
