:: SAARC members mum on container train plan ~

Indian government on Friday said that seven other member-states of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation have not yet offered their comments on its proposal to run a demonstration container train from Bangladesh to Pakistan via India and Nepal.

India had mooted the proposal at the third meeting of SAARC Inter-Governmental Group on Transport held in Colombo on July 24 this year. The SAARC member-states were to study the proposal and make their comments by Oct 24 last.

Rajya Sabha–the Upper House of Indian Parliament–that New Delhi had circulated a concept paper on running of a demonstration container train from Bangladesh to Pakistan via India and Nepal at the SAARC meet in Colombo.

The possible corridor for running the demonstration train mentioned in the concept paper starts from either Chittagong port or Dhaka in Bangladesh and passes through Katihar in India and Birgunj in Nepal and ends at Lahore in Pakistan, said Ahmed.

‘The meeting of the SAARC Inter-Governmental Group on Transport noted the proposal and the Member States were to consider this proposal and offer their comments within three months,’ he said, in a written reply to a question by a member of the Rajya Sabha.

He also added that the SAARC transport ministers, who had met on the next day (July 25, 2009), also endorsed the decision to study New Delhi’s proposal.
